Built for the Next Step in Your Career

SHU's 093 program is designed for school administrators who are ready to move from school leadership to district leadership. The program offers a focused, one-year, 15-credit curriculum that prepares you for the complexity of leading Connecticut public schools.

The program carries a 100% completion rate, and many graduates now serve as district superintendents across Connecticut.

Program Themes

The program curriculum emphasizes current and emerging problems of practice confronted by district leaders, with an emphasis on the following themes:

  • Student-centered and learning-focused leadership
  • Legal and policy considerations
  • Effective internal and external communication
  • Equity, diversity, social justice
  • Ethical approaches to decision making

How the Program Works

Delivery

This one-year, 15-credit program includes four courses completed over two semesters, along with an internship that spans the academic year. Courses follow a hybrid format that blends synchronous online learning with on-campus meetings. Typically, the cohort meets online on the Friday before the first Saturday class, followed by three additional Saturday classes each semester. Cohorts are hosted on both the Fairfield campus and Griswold location.

Students learn from and alongside superintendents and other experts in educational leadership and policy.

Internship

Students complete a one-year internship with a current superintendent of schools in a district where they do not currently work. Additionally, students complete a capstone project that seeks to address an organizational challenge impacting student learning in their home district.

Learning from active superintendents was extremely beneficial. They could offer real, in-the-moment lessons and insight into the day-to-day workings of a superintendent, in addition to theoretical curriculum. Having a small cohort of 12 individuals created an amazing community of learners and professionals, who bonded to become a support system both for school-related tasks and as professional resources.
