AS Nursing Application Deadlines

Admission Criteria

The Admissions Committee reviews applications holistically, taking into account each student’s personal situation and demonstrated potential for success. The application review includes an analysis of academic preparation, including high school and college transcripts, coursework rigor and selected grades in prerequisites, as well as life experiences such as professional skills training and military experience.

Application Criteria

  • Minimum Prerequisite GPA of 2.75
  • Minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.75
  • GED, or high school diploma including the following, unless prior college credits have been earned:
    • 3+ years of high school Math, including 2 years of Algebra and 1 year of Geometry; minimum grade of C+
    • 1 year of high school Chemistry; minimum grade of C+
    • 1 year of high school Biology; minimum grade of C+
  • No more than two attempts in math and science prerequisites
  • TEAS score of 70% or higher with no more than two attempts within the past twelve months. (Only TEAS results taken in-person at a testing center will be accepted.) TEAS requirement is waived for applicants with a bachelor's or master's degree

Application Requirements

  • Completion of the admissions application
  • $50 application fee
  • Attendance at an AS Nursing Info Session (attendance is taken at sessions)
  • Submission of proof of high school completion via one of the following:
    • Final High School Transcript
    • GED
    • Translation of Foreign Credential (All students who wish to receive academic credit for coursework taken at a foreign university will have to provide a course-by-course evaluation issued by WES, ECE, FIS, TEC or by any other accredited organization listed on NACES. In addition to the course-by-course evaluation, an official description of each university course must be provided in English)
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities must be submitted to enroll@sacredheart.edu or mailed to Undergraduate Admissions, Sacred Heart University, 5151 Park Avenue, Fairfield, CT 06825
  • TEAS Test – 70% or higher on a test taken in-person, no more than twice in 12 months. Applicants with a bachelor's degree are not required to take the TEAS test

Applicants will also be evaluated on the following

  • Prerequisite courses are not required for admission; however, applicants who have completed prerequisite coursework must have a minimum prerequisite GPA of 2.75 with no more than two attempts in math and science. Prerequisites for Nursing 101 are as follows:
    • Human Anatomy & Physiology I*: 4 credits, B- or better within 5 years of application
    • Human Anatomy & Physiology II*: 4 credits, B- or better within 5 years of application
    • Microbiology: 4 credits, B- or better within 5 years of application
    • Math for Nursing or College Algebra*: 3 credits
      • Math for Nursing (MA 105), C+ or better within 5 years of application. Math for Nursing is taken only at SHU
      • College Algebra, B- or better within 5 years of application
    • English Composition or First-Year Seminar*: 3 credits, C+ or better
    • Introduction to Psychology: 3 credits, C or better
    • Lifespan: 3 credits, C or better
    • Ethics: 3 Credits, C or better
    • Humanities: 3 credits, C or better
  • Applicants who have attended another nursing program must obtain a letter stating that they left in good standing. If admitted, the applicant will have to complete the program in its entirety. Sacred Heart University does not transfer in nursing courses from other programs.

*Cannot be taken fully online

Courses Eligible for Transfer

Credits may be transferred toward general education requirements for the degree, if credit and grade minimums are met. Math and science courses must be taken within the past five years.

All major courses and select general education courses (Catholic Intellectual Tradition and Mathematics) must be taken at Sacred Heart University.

  • Introduction to Psychology*
    • 3 credits, C or better
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology I*
    • 4 credits, B- or better within 5 years of application
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology II*

  • Intro to Microbiology*
    • 4 credits, B- or better within 5 years of application
  • Humanities
    • 3 credits, C or better
  • Ethics
    • 3 credits, C or better
  • Lifespan Development
    • 3 credits, C or better

*Prerequisites for NUR 101

Note that all students admitted to an associate degree program must fulfill course requirements for their degree at Sacred Heart per University policy.

Admitted students must complete a health clearance, as well as pass a criminal background check and drug screen, in order to register for classes. Instructions on completing this clearance are provided upon receipt of the non-refundable enrollment deposit.
