Why Study Leadership & Higher Education

The minor in leadership & higher education is a compliment to many of SHU’s majors. Students will benefit from course work that focuses on leadership theory and human development and apply it to several different fields such as business, psychology and education.  Additionally, this minor is great for anyone who enjoys their involvement in student events and activities and wants to learn more about leadership. It also is good for students who have an interest in student development or the history of higher education.

The minor in leadership & higher education requires the completion of 15 credits.

Required Courses

Students must complete the 12-credit core.

Considers the application of psychological principles to educational theory and practice. Candidates explore the many ways of thinking about knowledge, teaching, and learning. Major theories of learning and development are introduced and consistent themes and concepts identified.

This course presents an overview of the historical development of higher education and student affairs in the US. The course examines the complex nature of American Higher Education, as well as influences, from its beginning through contemporary organization and values. Additionally, this course examines the origins and historical development of Student Affairs as a profession, including current values and competencies.

This course explores student leadership in Higher Education, including leadership theory, group dynamics, and assessment.  Students will explore leadership theory and analyze the interaction of theory with practice.

This course examines psychosocial, cognitive and integrative developmental theories. Students will conceptualize how college students grow and develop during college and become familiar with the major families of theories for understanding college student development. Students will learn how to address concerns of students. Students will analyze developmental theory and apply in practical settings in higher education. Students will design educational interventions

Choose One

Students must select one three-credit course below.

Based in the Gaeltacht region of West Kerry, the course compares the education system in Ireland with that of the United States. Topics addressed include curriculum and instruction, funding and governance, teacher preparation, multiculturalism, language policy, and contemporary school reform. Teacher candidates will be introduced to the students and teachers of Dingle, Ireland and experience the Irish education system up close and personal. Candidates will observe classrooms in action, learn from Irish teachers and administrators, and meet teacher candidates and their professors. Open to all students in FCEHD teacher education programs, the course counts in lieu of ED 304 Culturally Sustaining Education or it serves as an MAT elective.

This course allows students to gain supervised, practical work experience in higher education. The internship experience is paired with a learning environment so that students can grow and develop through that experience

An in-depth study of developmental and behavioral issues in adolescence. Emphasis is on adjustment to adolescent roles, the search for self-identity, and healthy and unhealthy personality development.
Prerequisite: Take PS 110

This course presents the fundamentals of counseling and psychotherapy. Approaches covered include cognitive- behavioral, client- centered, and rationally- emotive therapy.
