Business Core

Emphasis on the information that the language of business provides for decisionmakers. This is accomplished by using a transactions-analysis approach. Individual and team-based problems and cases are used to stress accounting fundamentals as well as the global and ethical issues of accounting decisions.

Provides an overview of the principles and techniques used in financial management and an introduction to financial markets. Topics include time value of money, measures of risk, models for pricing bonds and stocks, financial analysis, capital structure, cost of capital, capital budgeting, and working capital management. Students are introduced to financial problem-solving using Microsoft Excel.

An interdisciplinary study of the management of organizations and decision making, utilizing behavioral and quantitative approaches. Topics include decision-making, motivation and behavior, leadership, group behavior, organizational change, planning, control, and allocation of resources. These topics are addressed against a backdrop of management responses to issues of ethics, social responsibility, and globalization. Lecture and case-study format.

This is a survey course. The objective of this class is to learn to apply legal and ethical principles to managerial-related problems. The course provides a general study of areas of laws pertinent to business, including tort law, contract law, employment law, criminal law, and constitutional law. The student is expected to learn to identify legal issues and consider the ethical implications of his or her solution or decision.

Negotiation is the art and science of securing agreements between two or more interdependent parties. Hence, the purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of the psychological and strategic dynamics of negotiation. The course is grounded in the major concepts and theories of bargaining, negotiation, and mediation and is designed to use a combination of simulations and analysis to build your own personal experience in the classroom and in the real world.

Investigates the components of the marketing mix. A managerial approach is employed and case studies supplement each area of exploration. Topics include customer behavior, product policy, channels of distribution, advertising and promotion, price policy, marketing programs, and the legal aspects of marketing.

Reviews the project life cycle from planning through closeout, with emphasis on drawings, specifications, and basic construction terminology. Highlights professional ethics, safety awareness, and career paths in construction management.

Examines properties, production, and applications of common construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, metals, wood, and finishes. Explores typical construction methods and assemblies for residential, commercial, and civil projects. Emphasizes selection of materials based on performance, cost, constructability, and sustainability considerations.

Covers principles and field techniques of construction surveying including distance and angle measurement, leveling, topographic surveys, and layout. Applies surveying to site planning, earthwork quantities, and control for buildings and infrastructure. Introduces site analysis topics such as access, drainage, utilities, and environmental constraints.

Builds foundational skills in interpreting architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and schedules. Covers graphic conventions, scales, sections, details, and symbols used across building and civil projects. Surveys building mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems and their role in occupant health, comfort, and safety. Examines principles of construction safety management, OSHA regulations, and jobsite hazard identification and control. Explores quality planning, inspection, testing, and documentation processes that assure conformance with contract requirements. Emphasizes development of site specific safety and quality plans and the leadership behaviors that support a strong safety culture.

Covers techniques for conceptual, preliminary, and detailed estimates for building and infrastructure projects. Develops skills in quantity takeoff, pricing of labor, equipment and materials, subcontractor analysis, and compilation of bids. Addresses contingencies, project budgets, and the relationship between cost, time, and scope in project control.

Explores leadership, communication, and team dynamics in construction organizations and project teams. Reviews project administration processes including documentation, meetings, procurement, submittals, change orders, and closeout. Provides supervised work experience with a construction, design build, or related organization. Students apply classroom knowledge to field and office assignments in areas such as estimating, scheduling, project engineering, or site supervision. Requires documented learning goals, employer evaluation, and a reflective report connecting internship experiences to program outcomes.

Examines principles of sustainable design, green building rating systems, and high performance construction practices. Topics include site stewardship, energy and water efficiency, materials and waste management, and indoor environmental quality. First of a two-course sequence in which student teams plan a comprehensive construction project. Focuses on project selection, scope definition, data collection, and development of preliminary estimates, schedules, and risk analyses. Emphasizes integration of prior coursework, team organization, and communication with faculty and industry mentors.

Continuation of Capstone I in which teams finalize and present a complete project proposal. Students refine estimates, schedules, logistics plans, safety and quality programs, and BIM or visualization deliverables. Culminates in written and oral presentations to faculty and industry reviewers that demonstrate readiness for professional practice.

This course focuses on the GIS principles, methods, and techniques that are particularly relevant to and useful for problem solving in environmental analysis and management. Specfically this course has four major components: an overview of selected GIS principles including data models,scale and spatial sampling, and spatial autocorrelation; a review of the major techniques or issues for environmental data acquisition and integration; an introduction to environmental analysis and modeling techniques; and a discussion of several applied areas of environmental modeling techniques as related to coastal ecology, hydrology, natural hazards, natural resources management, and environmental planning.

Full-time career-related work experience in the industry during one full semester. Students will work with their on-site employer. A final summary report will be required from both the student and supervisor.

This course explores emerging technologies transforming the construction industry, including BIM, reality capture, drones, robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, prefabrication, modular construction, and construction data analytics. Students evaluate real-world applications to improve efficiency, safety, cost control, and sustainability, while developing strategies for implementing innovative construction practices.
Prerequisite: Take CMGT-270 CMGT-350

This course covers the planning and management of construction field operations and equipment resources, including site logistics, equipment selection, productivity, maintenance planning, fleet management, and material handling. Students will learn to optimize field performance, coordinate resources, manage risk, and apply operational planning through real-world case studies and applications.

This is an introduction to Statistics and Probability for Computer Science and Engineering. In this course, you will learn all the theories, concepts and applications of Statistics and Probability; from organizing and presenting data, sampling, testing hypotheses, confidence intervals and regression to probability theories, random variables and distributions.
Prerequisite: Take MA-151

This course introduces microeconomic concepts such as supply and demand analysis, theories of the firm and individual behavior, competition and monopoly, welfare analysis, and labor market. Students will also be introduced to the use of microeconomic applications to address problems such as the role of government, environmental policies, insurance markets, and income distribution.

Explores limits and approximation, differential and integral calculus of the elementary algebraic and transcendental functions, and applications of differentiation and integration.

Non-calculus-based course covering the basic principles of mechanics (units, vectors, 1D and 2D motion, concepts of force, torque, static equilibrium, energy, work, momentum, rotational motion, and gravitation), fluid mechanics, temperature, and thermal expansion. A prerequisite to PY 113.
