Criteria to Progress to the Master of Science in Athletic Training Program
Students admitted to the dual degree program must continue, as undergraduate students, to meet program-specific criteria in order to progress to enrollment in the MSAT program as outlined below:
- Successful completion of the bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Note that participation in the 3+2 dual degree program requires successful completion of the bachelor’s degree in exercise science or health science
- Successful completion of all required prerequisite courses with no individual prerequisite course grade below a “C.”
- All progression requirements must be completed and documented at the time matriculation materials are submitted for review. Students are responsible for ensuring all required materials are received by the program by the application deadline.
- Prerequisite courses include:
- Human Anatomy & Physiology I with Lab
- Human Anatomy & Physiology II with Lab
- Concepts in Biology I with Lab
- Physics with Lab (PY 104/L or PY 111/113)
- Chemistry with Lab (CH 117/119 or CH 151/153)
- Kinesiology or Biomechanics
- Exercise Physiology
- Nutrition or Fundamentals of Nutrition
- Statistics
- Introduction to Psychology
- Documentation of a minimum of 10-15 hours of observation under direct supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer
- SHU provides an observation form for students to document this experience
- Personal statement (1-2 pages) on why you are pursuing a career in the field of athletic training
- Two letters of recommendation that speak on the student’s readiness for study in a graduate-level academic program and potential success as a health care professional
- Submission of a form of acknowledgment and understanding of essential functions of the athletic training profession
