The Sixth-Year Degree in Literacy is a 33-credit state approved, nationally recognized program preparing prospective literacy professionals for CT literacy certification, which include the 102 Remedial Reading and Language Arts Specialist certification, and the 097 Reading and Language Arts Consultant certification. Clinical experiences include authentic opportunities for reading candidates to hone their practice through one-on-one tutoring, mentoring, coaching and leading professional learning experiences.

Program Overview

  • The Sixth-Year Degree in Literacy is offered completely online
  • Candidates must hold a CT Initial Educator certificate and have taught for three years before being recommended for their 102 certification.
  • Any applicant for an endorsement in Remedial Reading & Remedial Language Arts (102) or Reading and Language Arts Consultant (097) will be required to pass the Reading Specialist Test (008).

The Sixth-Year Degree in Literacy provides professional education to master’s degree prepared teachers in the area of Reading & Language Arts. Candidates will study reading and language from a much broader perspective than that of a classroom teacher. Their training will give them the skills to lead staff development, run intervention clinics, chair appropriate departments, manage summer programs, write grants and to provide these services in school settings.

The goal of the program is to prepare candidates to serve as literacy leaders in their schools and districts. Graduates will be knowledgeable in all aspects of curriculum, assessment and instruction and will provide guidance to the school and community in shaping local literacy programs.
