    Students will explore the theoretical concepts of filial play therapy and explore the systemic applications of play therapy for families and the diverse applications in myriad settings. Students will learn concepts and skills necessary to establish, implement, construction, and facilitate filial therapy and family play therapy sessions. Students will also learn concepts and skills necessary for teaching parents/caregivers/teachers/etc. to use play therapy techniques to enhance and establish facilitative relationships with individuals.

    This course is designed to explore developmental play therapy theory and concepts related to abuse, crisis, and trauma. This course explores techniques and models specific to helping individuals prevent, cope, or heal challenges following abuse, crisis, and trauma. Focus is on assisting in achieving optimal growth and development through evidenced based and developmental appropriate play therapy interventions.

    EDS 571 LITERACY OF THE SPECIAL LEARNER   3.0 Credit(s)
    This course is designed to prepare educators to improve the literacy achievement of students with or at-risk for significant reading difficulties or disabilities. This course focuses on literacy theory, explicit instruction and assessment in each of the five components of reading, and a framework for intensive intervention and data-based decision-making with diverse student populations. There will also be a focus on the development and educational needs of students with dyslexia or who experience other difficulties in acquiring the literacy skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

    This course will provide students with an in-depth look at how litigation and legislation have shaped special education today. Students will gain an understanding of IDEA, the main governing body behind special education services as well as other factors that influence special education (IEPs, Least Restrictive Environment, Section 504, etc.). The use of advocacy and policy will be examined as ways special education law is influenced. Students will also study how the legal system impacts students and teachers in the classroom.

    SW 545 SW Practice With Lgbtq+community   3.0 Credit(s)
    This course focuses on the relationship between sex, gender, sexuality and recognize how one's identity affects their daily lives, experiences and access to services. The marginalization and intersectionality within the LGBTQ+ Community will be explored, as well as exploring areas of vulnerability for the LGBTQ+ population such as hate crimes, suicide, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse as well as mental health and physical illness . A critical analysis of policies at micro, mezzo and macro levels will be used for identifying ways to engage, advocate and support the community at a variety of practice levels. A working knowledge of some of the specialized needs of, and practice with, the LGBTQ+ Community will be developed.

Candidates design and carry out their own literacy action research project and share their findings in both oral and written form. This course is designed to provide future literacy specialists with the skills needed to effectively evaluate literacy research, engage in teacher research, share research findings in a professional manner with colleagues, and use research to inform one's literacy teaching practice.
