Cap & Gown Information
Cap, gown and hood are provided free of charge for each graduate participating in the ceremonies. Items such as custom tassels, announcements, rings, etc., are available for purchase at an additional cost.
As Commencement is a memorable day in your life and will be preserved in numerous photographs, appropriate attire and footwear is suggested.
Undergraduate Students

Pick-up Information for Undergraduate Students
April 21-22, 2026 | 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at the SHU Bookstore (McMahon Commons on Park Avenue Campus)
If you are unable to pick up your cap and gown yourself, a friend or family member may pick it up for you with a note from you granting them permission to pick up your items. Your note may be a hard copy or email (text messages will not be accepted) and should include your first and last name, student ID number and your friend’s first and last name. The person picking up should have a photo ID for themselves as well.
Graduate Students
- The deadline to order cap & gowns is April 17, 2026. Pre-ordered cap & gowns will be shipped directly to your home address.

For doctoral students: Herff Jones is offering a $75 discount on custom doctoral regalia that is valid through April 1, 2026. Enter code SACREDHEART75 at checkout. Allow six to eight weeks for delivery. Select the following from the drop-down options: State: Connecticut; City: Fairfield; and School: Sacred Heart University.
Cords & Sashes
The Sacred Heart University Commencement Committee authorizes the use of cords and/or stoles that recognize students who have achieved academic honors or who represent the following programs and/or organizations: academic programs, honor societies, officially recognized student organizations, athletics and alumni. Lists of authorized cords and/or stoles are maintained by the offices listed below, which can be contacted for additional information or questions regarding the procurement and/or appropriateness of the honor cords and/or stoles:
- Academic Programs (Dean of the College)
- Honors Societies (Dean of the College)
- Officially Recognized Student Organizations (Student Life – Ray Mencio or Sara Helfrich)
- Athletic Distinction (Athletics – Jack Pinho)
- Alumni Association (Alumni Engagement – Jaimie DeSisto)
- Performing Arts (choir, band, dance and theatre arts – Erin Marcel)
- Veterans Affairs
Approval process for cords and sashes is done one year in advance.
Stole of Gratitude
A stole of gratitude gives you the chance to thank those who helped you on your educational journey. Wear it for the ceremony and then present it to the person who helped you make your dream a reality.
