OCE Graduate Assistant: Transportation & Volunteer Programming

To assist the staff of Community Engagement by managing OCE vehicles, transportation schedule and weekly volunteer opportunities.

  • Part-time (20 hours/week for 12 months with the potential to extend to 24 months depending on graduate program timeline)
  • Compensation:
    • $17/hour
    • $1,000 dining dollars

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

The Transportation & Volunteer Programming Graduate Assistant position will be responsible for managing OCE vehicles and weekly volunteer opportunities, including mentoring programs. 

This position collaborates with offices across campus as well as our community agency partners in the Greater Bridgeport community. The Office of Community Engagement is a fast paced office with a high level of interpersonal communication among students, faculty/staff, and community partners.

  • Maintain OCE vehicles, including gas, oil changes, cleanliness, and other maintenance. Manage transportation schedule and requests.
  • Manage weekly signups for volunteer opportunities. This includes frequent communication with community partners, supervision and scheduling of work-study drivers and student program leaders, and maintenance of online signup system. Graduate Assistant should be prepared to attend weekly programs to check in, as well as fill in for drivers as needed.
  • Respond to incoming volunteer and partnership requests, which includes organizing volunteers for one-time service events and/or conducting needs assessments of new organizational partners.
  • Assist student leaders in programming, scheduling, etc. Attend programming periodically to support and observe.
  • Participate in Community Connections (end of August) program as drivers, on-site coordinators and any other capacity that is needed. (This will be a period where you will need to be available all hours, and more than 20/week.)
  • Support other office-wide events and initiatives as needed, such as the Volunteer Fair, Holiday Drives, Admissions Events (Open Houses, Freshman Orientation).
  • Assist office administrative duties, as needed (answering phones, assisting student walk-ins, etc.)

Knowledge & Skills Needed

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Experience in community service, program management.
  • Valid United States Driver’s license (must pass University Background check and driving test).
  • Capacity for developing and sustaining effective relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, students, as well as a variety of outside community partners.
  • Candidate should be a self-starter with the ability to multitask and handle multiple, ongoing projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Excellent computer skills. Demonstrated experience using MS Office (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint), Google Docs, Social Media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Wordpress).
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Attention to detail a must.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Administrative & Front Desk Support
  • Front Desk Assistance: Greet and assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a professional and welcoming manner.
  • Communication Management: Answer phone calls, respond to emails, and direct inquiries to the appropriate office or individual.
  • Appointment Scheduling: Manage office and Mission Lounge calendars and assist with scheduling meetings/events
  • Document Preparation & Data Entry: Assist with drafting, formatting, and maintaining office documents, reports, and databases.
  • Office Organization: Maintain office supplies, organize files, and ensure a professional workspace.  
Community Engagement & Outreach
  • Event Planning & Support: Assist in organizing community engagement events, workshops, and information sessions for students, faculty, and external stakeholders.
  • Social Media & Marketing Support: Help create content for newsletters, social media, and website updates to promote community initiatives.
  • Student & Community Liaison: Serve as a point of contact for students and community members, providing information on programs, resources, and opportunities for involvement.
  • Partnership Development: Support efforts to build and maintain relationships with community organizations, and alumni. 
Special Projects & Professional Development
  • Confidentiality & Compliance: Handle sensitive information in accordance with university policies and FERPA guidelines.
  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Work with faculty, staff, and fellow graduate assistants to develop initiatives that enhance student and community engagement.
  • Office Representation: Represent OCE and present at Admissions events throughout the year
  • Special Assignments: Participate in research, administrative tasks, or projects assigned by supervisors to support institutional and community goals. May be asked to drive OCE vehicles as needed.

Knowledge & Skills Needed

  • Must have a driver’s license and clean driving record; be willing to be certified to drive SHU vehicles

Academic Mentoring Program (AMP) Coordinator

This position will assist the staff of the Office of Community Engagement by developing and implementing programming for the Jones-Zimmermann Academic Mentoring Program (JZ-AMP) for middle school students at John Winthrop Elementary School. 

  • Part-time (20 hours/week for 12 months, with the potential to extend, depending on graduate program timeline)
  • Compensation: $18,680
    • $17,680 stipend
    • $500 dining dollars/semester

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

The AMP Graduate Assistant position will be responsible for developing and implementing programming for the Jones-Zimmermann Academic Mentoring Program (JZ-AMP).
The Office of Community Engagement is a fast-paced office with a high level of inter-personal communication among students, faculty/staff, and community partners. This position collaborates with multiple parties, including the OCE Staff, SHU Student Mentors and Student Leaders, Bridgeport Public School teachers, school counselors, and administrators, and middle school students and their parents.

  • Design, implement, and monitor afterschool programming for the Academic Mentoring Program (AMP). Coordinate with SHU clubs/organizations and academic departments to offer enrichment programming.
  • Coordinate logistics for periodic field trips (2x per semester) and end-of-year graduation event.
  • Supervise undergraduate student mentors and student leaders. Includes:
    • Data collection for reports/studies.
    • Attending periodic Foundation meetings.
    • Assisting with publicity/media efforts (including social media and AMP Yearbook).
  • Liaise with Jones-Zimmermann Foundation. Includes:
    • Data collection for reports/studies.
    • Attending periodic Foundation meetings.
    • Assisting with publicity/media efforts (including social media and AMP Yearbook).
  • Liaise with John Winthrop Elementary School, including teachers, counselors, administrators, and mentee parents. Manage communications between VP&SL Staff and John Winthrop. Includes:
    • Organization of 2 events for parents (one per semester).
    • Communicating with parents about scheduling, bus transportation, and student absences.
    • Recruiting new student mentees.
Mission & Culture Office Support
  • Participate in Community Connections (end of August) and CURTIS Week (mid-January) programs as a student driver, on-site coordinator and any other capacity that is needed. (This will be a period where you will need to be available all hours, and more than 20/week.)
  • Support other office-wide events and initiatives as needed, such as the Volunteer Fair, Holiday Drives, Admissions Events (Open Houses, Freshman Orientation).
  • Assist office administrative duties, as needed (answering phones, assisting student walk-ins, etc.)
