Student Success Graduate Assistant for the Office of Student Advising & Success

The role of the Success Team GA is to manage various programs within the Office of Student Advising & Success, assist student advising staff by managing day to day operations, work one-on-one with students on various academic supports, research and carry out student-focused initiatives, including the Pre-Fall Program and the Exploratory Living & Learning Community.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serves as an academic coach to students, coordinates and provides overall quality assurance and troubleshooting support for all Academic Success Coaching
  • Assists in planning and coordinating academic support programs for first-year and other student cohorts (e.g. transfer students, students on academic probation), facilitate their delivery, and collect data to assess and measure their success
  • Coordinates academic support and transitional programming for transfer and part-time students; provides individualized coaching, facilitates connections to campus resources, and tracks engagement to ensure academic and social integration into the SHU community
  • Co-facilitates one section of Academic Success Planning (ASP 099) each spring
  • Collaborates with SAS Team to coordinate registration training for students within each college and facilitates registration group sessions
  • Assists in the planning and implementing of success workshops
  • Works with the SAS office on the Start Strong week-long pre-fall program, along with the Exploratory Living & Learning Community throughout the fall and spring
  • Participates in bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with supervisor for guidance, accountability and ongoing professional support
  • Develops positive and supportive relationships with SHU students
  • Demonstrates professionalism, responsibility, punctuality and academic integrity
  • Liaises with colleges to design academic support programs for first-year and other student cohorts (e.g. transfer students, students on academic probation), facilitate their delivery and collect data to assess and measure their success
  • Answers and returns phone calls, emails and other correspondence from parents, professors, students and other SHU departments
  • Assists with development and design of PR materials for various SAS programs
  • Utilizes Ellucian Advise, Student Planning & Advisng (SPA) and other software to retrieve student data
  • All other duties as assigned

Knowledge & Skills Needed

Required
  • BA or BS in education, psychology, social work or related field
  • Experience in a college environment
  • Organizational skills
Communication Skills
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with faculty and staff to ensure student, department and University needs are met effectively
  • Communicate professionally with students, outside providers, parents (as needed) and staff members to ensure timely decision-making 
  • Collaborate with department staff to ensure successful goals
  • High level of energy required. Seek to motivate and inspire

Unusual Working Conditions

Student-focused work environment. May require evening hours and/or weekend hours, specifically during Welcome Events and Orientation, as well as Living & Learning Community weeknight events.
