What is a Graduate Assistant?

Graduate Assistants (GAs) provide services such as administrative and faculty support. In return, these students are eligible to receive a compensation package consisting of a tuition waiver and/or stipend; and in some cases, a housing waiver and/or meal plan. Per the Sacred Heart University Human Resources Department, employees of SHU or dependents of a SHU employee cannot obtain a GA position.

Applicants must be formally accepted into a degree-seeking graduate program prior to applying for a GA position.

Types of Graduate Assistantships

Administrative Graduate Assistantships

Fully matriculated, full-time, graduate students may apply for these positions; those interested may contact the hiring department directly with questions pertaining to availability and job requirements. These assistantships often pay a stipend as they provide substantial assistance to administrative departments throughout the University.

Research/Teaching Graduate Assistantships

There are a limited number of these assistantships available; those interested may contact the hiring department directly with questions pertaining to availability and job requirements. These assistantships usually carry some tuition remission as they assist faculty with research/teaching projects.

Residence Hall Directors

These positions are made available to fully matriculated, full-time, graduate students through Housing and Residential Life. These are live-in positions and are usually filled in the spring for the subsequent fall term by those who are interested in pursuing a career in student services. Criteria is highly selective.
