Graduating, leaving school, or dropping below half-time enrollment is a significant transition, and it is important to understand what comes next with your federal student loans. Federal Student Loan Exit Counseling is required for Direct Loan borrowers who graduate or are no longer enrolled at least half-time. It provides helpful information about repayment basics, borrower rights and responsibilities, and where to turn if repayment becomes difficult.

At Sacred Heart University, we also offer personalized loan exit counseling for students who would like one-on-one guidance from a financial aid advisor. During a personalized session, we can help you review your federal loan history, identify your loan servicer, understand when repayment begins, compare repayment options, and talk through next steps if monthly payments may be difficult.

Students are required to complete federal Student Loan Exit Counseling through their Federal Student Aid portal at studentaid.gov. The Federal Student Aid website provides a variety of helpful information and tools that will prepare you for loan repayment.

If you would like personalized support, contact the Student Financial Assistance Office at 203-371-7980 or sfa@sacredheart.edu to learn more about scheduling a loan exit counseling appointment.

The session with Mr. Mangini was incredibly helpful and informative. His guidance made it much easier to understand the different loan payment plans available to me. I felt more confident in making a decision that best suits my financial situation. The clear explanations and personalized advice were greatly appreciated. I highly recommend this session to anyone navigating their loan repayment options.

Participating in SHU's loan exit counseling service was the most productive and helpful way to begin my post-grad journey. It can feel overwhelming to graduate college and enter the workforce with college loans being in the mix, and Mr. Mangini was extremely clear on my repayment options with each loan servicer I have. I found that learning how to consolidate my loans and being educated on the repayment plans available to me were the most helpful portions of SHU's loan exit counseling service, and every student with any questions on their loans should schedule a meeting for peace of mind!
