Healthcare Informatics Blog

Since the passing of The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), which requires health care providers to create and maintain electronic health records (EHRs) for every patient, there has been a boom in the healthcare informatics field. Multiple new career paths have emerged and created thousands of new employment opportunities for those in the IT and healthcare fields. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BSL) is predicting that healthcare informatics will grow at a very high rate of 22% through 2022. This is more than twice the projected growth of employment overall.

At times I think my journey in informatics is unique though I know I’m wrong after meeting many of my colleagues in the field. Oddly, I think my roots in informatics reach back to my childhood and my fascination with the Science Fiction genre. I still remember being completely enthralled by the technology in use on Star Trek, Buck Rogers or Logan’s Run (am I dating myself?) or any of the other television programs or big screen movies during the 1970s and 1980s. How cool the future looked!
