Student Leadership Positions

The Welch Experience offers many students leadership and research positions. Through these hands-on opportunities, you’ll gain real-life experience across an array of disciplines. You’ll develop necessary skills, while building a bank of examples and stories of challenges and success that you can share in your interviews. 

Corporate Structure

The Jack Welch College of Business & Technology (WCBT) Corporate Structure program provides financial support and growth opportunities to students who demonstrate an interest in the field of business and demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development. In turn, the student will gain hands-on experience, while having a direct, positive impact on the University and the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology.

Students gain real-world experience through projects, initiatives, and events that they manage and maintain throughout the school year. These students work directly with the director of the Welch Experience and various faculty members to receive support and guidance on achieving their goals.

Human Resources Team

The human resources team oversees the recruiting, hiring, and interviewing process for over 100 student leadership positions within the WCBT, including Welch Mentors, other Corporate Structure members, pre-fall leaders and more. They also review contracts, conduct professional development seminars for student employees, and evaluate performances of all members at the end of each semester.

Excel Team

The excel team coordinates training and testing for Excel Level I and Level II Certifications, and provides a resource for students who want to compete in the Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge held every year, regardless of their major.

Marketing Team

The marketing team creates marketing and promotional material for WCBT Events through managing the Instagram and Tik Tok page, creating physical flyers using Canva, or running physical tabling campaigns designed to inspire WCBT student action.

Finance Team

The finance team creates a pipeline for every finance major’s story in the WCBT. They also manage the 50+ member Finance & Economics Club by bringing in finance speakers for freshman and sophomores and oversee the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) where juniors and seniors invest real money working with our Alumni Board.

Events Team

The events team runs all events put on by the WCBT, and helps student organizations, faculty, and other stakeholders host events in our spaces on West Campus. From College of Business Bingo and Trivia to a 65-person golf tournament, along with networking etiquette receptions and more. The events team gets experience in every aspect of event planning and management.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Minimum Cumulative GPA: 3.2
  • Minimum Class Standing: Freshman
  • Full-time undergraduate student
  • Good judicial standing
  • Evidence of leadership positions in the WCBT and beyond
  • Participation in internships, service-learning, or volunteer experiences
  • Demonstrated financial need

Mentors & Pre-Fall Leaders

Mentors

Each freshman student interested in the WCBT is given the opportunity to work with a Welch mentor. Our Welch mentors:

  • Meet their freshman mentees at the Welcome to Welch Conference Day held the Sunday before the first day of classes
  • Exchange contact information and set up a group chat starting in the summer and continuing throughout the academic year
  • Take their mentees to upper-level business courses to show them what classes are like within their majors of interest
  • Introduce their mentee to the Center for Career & Professional Development, so they can start the process of developing résumés, interviewing, and searching for internship opportunities
  • Accompany freshmen to Welch Experience events designed to develop knowledge, skills, abilities, and a professional network in the business world

Pre-Fall Leaders

The Mind Your Business pre-fall program is offered each August (during the week before classes begin) to incoming first-year students. The program gives students a head start in the WCBT and the business world. Participants will meet other business students, and network with campus and community leaders.

In addition to exploring possible majors, students learn how to build teams, take golf lessons, create a business presentation, build a résumé, strengthen leadership skills, and dress professionally, all skills that prepare them for the global business world. Pre-fall student leaders provide guidance and a model to incoming freshmen students on what it means to be successful in the WCBT.

Pre-fall student leaders are incorporated into the Welch Mentor program. Those wishing to be pre-fall student leaders are required to also be Welch Mentors for the entirety of the following academic school year.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee a group of four to five incoming first-year students
  • Contact group members over the summer and establish rapport
  • Host evening activities with pre-fall participants
  • Attend all scheduled workshops, seminars, trips, and activities during Pre-Fall Week
  • Answer student questions and provide thoughtful, professional direction
  • Monitor small groups and encourage students to speak up and participate
  • Report any behavioral issues to supervisors
  • Mentor and advise students as needed
  • Represent Sacred Heart University and the WCBT in a professional manner
  • Take on other duties as assigned
  • Attend student leader training sessions (mandatory)

  • Full-time WCBT undergraduate student

Welch Experience Interns

Throughout the academic year, the Welch Experience will hire interns to assist with its digital badging program through Suitable, summer programming, and more depending on department/faculty needs. Students only hear about these positions through Welch Announcements, an email that goes out every Monday on a first come, first served basis. Check your email!
