Stamford CFA Society
The Jack Welch College of Business & Technology has partnered with the Stamford Chartered Financial Analyst Society (SCFAS) for a unique program intended for aspiring investment professionals. The Investment Management Program (IMP) is designed to enable students to network with CFA professionals, learn about careers in investment management and prepare students to sit for Level 1 of the CFA exam.
In 2012 the IMP was named to the CFA Institute’s (CFAI) University Recognition Program. This status is earned by only a handful of programs at universities throughout the world. To be included in the CFAI University Recognition Program, all programs must possess a curriculum that follows the topics found on the CFAI Candidate Body of Knowledge.
Program Features
- Students enroll in specific series of courses that address the CFAI Candidate Body of Knowledge.
- The Investment Management Capstone is required. This course includes CFAI Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. The CFAI Ethical Decision Making Workshop is included in this Capstone course.
- Candidates take a mock CFA examination.
- Program members become Associate Members of the SCFAS. They are encouraged to attend SCFAS programs, events and conferences.
- Successful completion of the IMP prepares the students to take the CFA Level I examination.
- Hear what our students have to say about the program!

Credit Sights
CreditSights, an independent research provider that is widely recognized as an important voice on global credit markets, has secured Credit Magazine’s top spot in the independent research provider category for the sixth consecutive year. The honor reflects the breadth and depth of the company’s coverage of the markets.
“We appreciate the support that CreditSights offers to our Welch College of Business & Technology (WCBT) Investment Management Program through our partnership with the Stamford CFA Society, and we congratulate them on this honor,” said Dr. Rupendra Paliwal, interim dean of the WCBT at the time. “CreditSights continually receives this award even when compared against contenders that include the major rating agencies. It’s an impressive achievement.”
Events
For the second consecutive year Barclays hosted Investment Management Program (IMP) students to a meet with various departments throughout the bank. A total of seven qualified junior IMP students selected from both Sacred Heart University and UConn had the unique experience of participating in nine consecutive 30-minute sessions with various levels of department members.
Sessions entailed a Barclays employee describing their job function, responsibilities, and held Q&A and we had representatives from departments such as sales, trading, banking and human resources to name a few.
The program was directed by the Head of Global Research and Barclays participants included senior level management to recent hires which made the process of communicating the true feel of working at Barclays that much more effective. It came across quite clear that each Barclays employee, at all levels of management, demonstrated and expressed key qualities expected within the Barclays culture. Critical was a high level of energy, passion, and the ability to collaborate and multitask. But it was very clear, passion was a virtue needed for the long hours they work. IMP’s were able to tour the fixed income trading floor and sessions were held in a conference room just outside the trading floor itself.
Human resources described the multitude of internship opportunities and the hiring process along with the qualities and characteristics they look for. It was a long day for the students with non-stop meetings and discussions, however, it was a productive and effective venture.
The IMP thanks Barclays for this unique experience and we look forward to coming back next semester.
The IMP program has allowed me and other members to network with professionals in Fairfield County with the purpose of opening up career opportunities in the future. Also, the IMP capstone class is a tremendous way to prepare for the CFA exam and review important concepts in finance, economics, and accounting. I would highly recommend that motivated individuals pursuing careers in finance participate in the program.
The IMP has been a rewarding experience and is definitely something I would recommend to all committed students. It is a great network to put yourself in and it allows you to take advantage of some wonderful opportunities the business school has to offer. It is up to each member to make the most of what the program has to offer.
The Investment Management Program has been an invaluable experience and has offered me so many opportunities to further my education in finance and to meet professionals working in the industry. I am currently taking the IMP Capstone Course which helps prepare students to take Level One of the CFA exam. This type of course is offered at very few universities so I feel very fortunate to be able to partake in it. The course is designed to cover all the subjects that Level One of the CFA Exam will test. The IMP also offers students networking opportunities at Sacred Heart and within the Stamford CFA Society to meet CFA's and CFA candidates. Through these networking opportunities, I have spoken to many professionals about their experiences working in finance which has furthered my own career development and has helped guide my career path.
