In its annual Discovery Award, Sacred Heart University is privileged to invite the community to recognize and celebrate the gifts of caring and accomplished people. These exceptional men and women embody the exalted tradition of this University in their lives. They represent a wide diversity of professions but hold in common a passion for excellence and a tireless devotion to their fellow citizens. Each is truly an educator showing by example the inestimable value of learning, leadership, and service.
Our Honoree: Bill Mitchell
While Bill Mitchell is a lifelong resident of Westport, Conn., Sacred Heart is truly his home. A dedicated friend of the University, he has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2002 and is the former co-owner of Mitchell Stores, a three-generation family business that operates men’s and women’s specialty clothing stores that are nationally renowned for their personal service and strong customer relationships.
He is a former president of the Westport Rotary Club, a deacon at Saugatuck Congregational Church and an honorary chair at the Interfaith Housing Association. He has also served on boards at the Jewish Home for the Elderly, St. Vincent’s Medical Center and the Inner City Foundation for Charity and Education. He has three sons, Scott, Chris and Tyler, and has lived in Westport with his wife, Sue, for the last 47 years.
In recovery himself since 1990, Mitchell has been a committed friend and mentor to several SHU students who are currently in recovery and he tirelessly advocates for recovery-related projects. Sacred Heart welcomes his energy and passion as he leads us in championing the creation of a collegiate recovery program. We are delighted to honor him with the 2018 Discovery Award.
