‌What is the NOYCE Scholarship?

The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), responds to the critical need for K-12 teachers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by encouraging talented biology and mathematics majors to pursue teaching careers in secondary education. Sacred Heart University’s Biology and Mathematics Educators (BioME) Scholarship Program seeks to increase the number, quality, and effectiveness of biology and mathematics teachers interested in teaching in high-needs school districts across the United States. The BioME program provides biology and mathematics majors with scholarships over their junior and senior years at Sacred Heart University as well as funding to complete their Master of Arts in Teaching. Students will have opportunities to participate in specially designed seminars and courses to enhance your preparation as a secondary biology or math teacher as well as field experience specific to STEM education. You will become trained to take your place in the exciting world of STEM education in conjunction with the cultural competence, pedagogical knowledge, and dispositions to be a successful teacher in a high needs school district.

Why should I apply for this scholarship?
You can apply for this scholarship in order to best fulfill your opportunities as a STEM teacher. Teaching in a high-needs school is a very fulfilling life choice. The children who attend these schools come from various backgrounds and face difficulties such as economic, social and family challenges that detract from their focus on education. A traditional pre-service program does not generally address these issues. As a Noyce scholar, you will have training that best prepares you for a career changing the lives of children who deserve extra attention.
Who is eligible for this scholarship?
  • Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident alien

  • Must be a Biology or Mathematics Major

  • Good academic standing at SHU

  • Be accepted into the Isabelle Farrington College of Education

How will being a NOYCE scholar help me?
  • You will fulfill the need for teachers who are prepared to teach in multicultural classrooms, as well as become highly qualified to teach using the newest practices and standards set forth by the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards in Mathematics

  • SHU will partner with high-need school districts to offer programming that is part of an enhanced program for undergraduate biology and mathematics majors entering secondary education

  • Scholars will participate in program activities that will include new STEM-specific teacher education curricula and support that will enable STEM teachers to be effective

  • Students will participate in a selective Biology and Mathematics Educator (BioME) Scholarship Program

  • You will have a mentor dedicated to your success from a local high-needs school district for each year of the program, as well as a professor from SHU Education MAT graduate and teacher certification program.
The Robert Noyce program supports the efforts of colleges and universities to graduate highly qualified science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) teachers for high-need school districts. Sacred Heart’s Biology and Mathematics Educator Scholarship Program will provide tuition assistance to 18 Robert Noyce scholars in those two subjects, as well as necessary program and scholar support.

What is the plan of study for Noyce Scholars? 
Students will pursue the typical courses associated with the mathematics or biology undergraduate major.  In their junior year they will begin to take education courses that are required for teacher certification.  By the time the students start their fifth year in the MAT program, they will have completed 21 credits of teacher certification coursework.
What happens after I graduate?

For each full-year of a scholarship award received, scholarship recipients are required to complete two years of service as a STEM teacher in a high-need local educational agency, with a total service requirement of six years. This is a nationwide program.

Noyce faculty mentors will help ensure your content with your choice of location, as well as a location that satisfies NSF criteria. The following courses must be completed at a regionally accredited institution in the United States, with a grade of “C” or better.

Eligible Northeast school districts include:

  • CT: Danbury, Ansonia, Greenwich and Bridgeport
  • NY: Yonkers, New York City and East Ramapo
  • MA: New Salem, New Bedford, Salem and Boston

Scholarship details

Juniors and seniors will receive an average scholarship of $15,250 per year, based on the cost of attendance (COA) and the financial need profile of the students. The COA includes $36,920 annual tuition, $15,000 room and board, and $1,200 books and supplies. A sliding scale for the scholarships will be applied based on financial need and other sources of gift aid (on average, SHU students receive $15,231 in grants and scholarships). Based on financial aid data (considering gift aid and estimated family contribution), the Noyce scholarship is anticipated to cover all unmetneed. Post-Baccalaureate students participate in the Graduate Teacher Internship program (see Section D), which provides partial tuition credit and thus reduces tuition to $10,275. In the Post-Baccalaureate year, the Noyce scholars will receive a scholarship of $10,000 on average (according to a sliding scale based on need, sources of gift aid, and family contributions) to cover all unmet need.

Program highlights

Integrating Mathematics and Biology Across the Curriculum Undergraduate Seminar (IMBAC)
2 credit course for all BioME scholars (taken each semester of Junior and Senior year, total of 8 credits). Will focus on integrating mathematics and science via the NGSS and CCSS-M frameworks as well as building an awareness of STEM educational issues.

Mathematics and Biology Methods Graduate Course (MBM) 
3 credit course for all BioME scholars will take once during MAT program. An area of emphasis will be the organization of instruction around intellectually substantive and complex phenomena.

Undergraduate Research Project
All BioME scholars must conduct a 3-6 credit research project with a biology or mathematics faculty member. Students will present their research at a regional conference as well as SHU’s Academic Festival.

Summer Educational Internship
All BioME Scholars will complete a six week service learning internship experience in an educational setting which could include non-profit educational outreach programs, tutoring programs, summer school programs. BioME scholars will receive a $3000 stipend for this internship and free housing at SHU.

Beginning in their junior year, scholars will be assigned one faculty advisor from their STEM department and a second advisor from the education faculty. These advisors will meet with the scholars a minimum of once per semester to discuss the scholar’s academic plan and coursework needed to complete both the STEM degree and the MAT.

STEM Education Workshops
Workshops will be offered each semester and feature practicing teachers and administrators in STEM fields. Topics will include development and honing of teaching methods and pedagogy, lesson plan design, and broader issues in mathematics and biology education, with a focus on preparation for working in high-needs school settings. Workshops have a budget of $1000 per workshop.

Professional Society Memberships
All BioME scholars will receive funding to maintain memberships in one local and one national professional society related to their concentration (biology or mathematics). In addition, BioME scholars will receive annual travel funding to attend a professional conference.

Master Mentors
Each BioME scholar will be assigned a practicing teacher from a partnering district to serve as a mentor throughout the program. Mentors will support scholars in their curriculum content area, demonstrate classroom management style, pedagogy, and other teaching philosophies and offer invaluable career advice.
