Service Programs Abroad

Consider spending your spring break Sacred Heart University sends students on international service and immersion trips through the Office of Volunteer Programs Service Learning. Students travel to Central America during spring break, with delegations to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. Each trip has a different origin and purpose; however, the overall purpose is to develop students’ understanding of poverty. These trips offer a unique experience that blends community service with a study abroad experience.

Clinical Interprofessional International Service Learning

The Colleges of Health Professions and Nursing supports global learning for all degree levels.  Mission trips are offered several times a year, to Jamaica and Guatemala. The Jamaica service learning program runs in the fall with a focus on pediatrics and medical-surgical practice.  The program focuses on interprofessional learning while providing free medical and major surgical care to the impoverished people of the urban Kingston area.  On average, each program provides primary care to over 1,000 people.  The Guatemala program emphasizes OB nursing.  Faculty and students work with local doctors in the village of Pastores near La Antigua, Guatemala to meet the needs of 1,157 patients.  Visits run twice a year in the Greater Panchoy Valley surrounding Antigua focusing on medical-surgical type practice, public health, obstetrics and pediatrics.

Courses completed on a SHU study abroad program may fulfill general education, elective, or major/minor credits, enabling you, regardless of your academic plan, to study abroad and graduate according to your schedule. There is no better way to learn about yourself, expand your worldview, acquire marketable skills, and develop the habits of mind, heart, and spirit that will prepare you to engage purposefully in a global world.
