Clinical education provides students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge with clinical experience. All clinical experiences are under the direct supervision of certified athletic trainers.Students are exposed to a variety of clinical settings and will have the opportunity to work on-campus with Sacred Heart University varsity athletes and off-campus at a variety of clinical settings. The on- and off-campus Clinical Education Coordinators are responsible for clinical assignments. Students are responsible for providing transportation to off-campus sites.
The Athletic Training program requires all athletic training students to complete annually a Certificate of Health, which includes a physical examination and technical standards determination by an appropriate healthcare provider as outlined. All students must show proof of vaccination, immunization, and Hepatitis B vaccine series or signed waiver.
Clinical Hour Policy
The average number of hours is a guide for preceptors and students. We understand during some weeks, students may increase their hours, but it is expected this is compensated in the following weeks. All students are to have at least one day off in a seven-day period. The clinical education coordinator will check students’ hours at least 2 times per month, and anyone in violation or abusing the policy will be notified and proper course of action will be taken (please see below). No student should be exceeding the average hours per week on a consistent basis (i/e: for seniors 15-20/ week average - students should not exceed 20 hours a week on a consistent basis), and no student is to exceed 300 hours per semester. We want students to focus on quality hours with the assigned preceptor while maintaining their grades in the classroom.
