Robin L. McAllister, Ph.D.

Associate Professor

All his life, Professor Robin McAllister has loved studying and teaching literature and languages, especially ancient and medieval literature. At Wesleyan University he studied literature, history, and philosophy in an interdisciplinary program, the College of Letters, which included study at the Facultad de Filosofia y Letras in Madrid, Spain. His senior thesis was written on Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde and biblical typology. At Princeton University, where he did his graduate work, he wrote a thesis on the work of the 17th century Spanish poet Luis de Góngora. He has taught English, Spanish literature, comparative literature and literary criticism at the University of California at Irvine and at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Since joining the faculty of Sacred Heart University in 1979 he has taught courses in composition, medieval and 17thCentury English literature, Latin American literature in translation, world literature, and classical literature. He traveled to El Salvador as one of the members of the first Sacred Heart delegation to visit and work with the Salvadoran community after the United Nations truce ended their civil war. He was deeply moved by the experience of working through both the Church and Sacred Heart with communities of displaced poor families, fellow teachers, and students recovering from the trauma and conflict of civil war.

He is committed to travel and service for his students and himself in support of Sacred Heart’s mission as a Catholic university. He has been fortunate to participate in several University-supported missions in El Salvador, Bosnia, Kurdistan, and Peru. Professor McAllister hopes that his students come out of his courses not only academically prepared but also aware of the opportunities for service and travel that can transform their lives and the lives of those they encounter.
