Which program/concentration is right for me?

Chemistry Students in LabThe Chemistry program offers a balanced curriculum that prepares students for graduate study in the various areas of chemistry and for employment in the chemical industries. Also, the Chemistry major, coupled with selected supporting courses, provides excellent preparation for the study of medicine, dentistry and other health-related professions. The department also provides strong support for students majoring in other sciences as well as for nonscience majors.

To accomplish these objectives, we offer the following Chemistry programs:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
    The student majoring in Chemistry with a BS degree can choose between Traditional or Biochemistry concentration.
    • ‌The Traditional concentration provides a curriculum with strong supportive courses in mathematics and physics. This program is recommended for graduate study in chemistry or as preparation for an industrial position.

    • The Biochemistry concentration is strongly recommended as preparation for a career in biochemistry, clinical chemistry or pharmaceutical chemistry. The program is also suitable for graduate study in biochemistry and pharmacology.

  • Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry prepares students for careers requiring scientific knowledge, laboratory and critical thinking skills, and for graduate study in the molecular life sciences, medicine or health professions. The BS in Biochemistry is recommended in place of the BS in Chemistry - Biochemistry Concentration for all students enrolling after Fall 2017.

  • The combined Bachelor/Master degree program allows students completing their undergraduate degree in chemistry at SHU to have the opportunity to obtain a BS/MS combined degree in chemistry. This is a five-year undergraduate/graduate accelerated track. Students who complete this track receive both BS and MS degrees.

  • The 3 + 3 Bachelor’s & J.D. Program allows students to earn a Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor by completing all required credits for their degree program at Sacred Heart University within 3 years (90 credits). The balance of their undergraduate credits (30 credits) will be completed during their first year of law school at Seton Hall University.
  • The 3 + 3 Bachelor's & Pharm.D. Program allows students to earn a Bachelor’s degree and Pharm.D. by completing all required credits for their degree program at Sacred Heart University within 3 years (115 credits). The balance of their undergraduate credits will be completed during their first year of pharmacy school at University of Saint Joseph School of Pharmacy.

There are six teaching labs and four research labs serving the needs of Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.

What are my career opportunities with a Chemistry degree?

The results of this education are well-documented. Many alumni continue in chemistry-related fields, often attending graduate school in chemistry, biochemistry, or medicine, or pursuing careers in industrial research or the biomedical sciences. Other career choices in recent years have included patent law and forensic science.

Graduates of the Chemistry program have gone on to work for the following companies: Boehringer-Ingelheim (Ridgefield, CT), Cytec Industries (Stamford, CT), King Industries (Norwalk, CT), Pfizer Pharmaceuticals (Groton, CT), Unilever (Trumbull, CT), RT Vanderbilt (Norwalk, CT) and US Surgical/Covidian (Norwalk, CT).

What graduate schools have your Chemistry students enrolled in?

Students who completed the program and opted to continue their education enrolled in Sacred Heart University's master's degree programs in Chemistry, as well as schools such as: UCONN Medical School, UCONN Dental School, UCONN Law School, Princeton, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Yale, Penn State, Penn State Medical School, University of Delaware, University of Arizona and Boston College Law School Dartmouth.

Will I have internship opportunities?

Yes, internship opportunities are readily available. Some of our students have held internships at the following companies: Cytec Industries (Stamford, CT), King Industries (Norwalk, CT), Unilever - Consumer Products (Trumbull, CT), RT Vanderbilt (Norwalk, CT), US Surgical/Covidian (Norwalk, CT), and DEP - Department of Environmental Protection  Buck Scientific (Norwalk, CT). All of the listed companies are in close proximity to SHU's main campus.

Will I have research opportunities?

Students have the opportunity to pursue research with a faculty member whose interests and area of expertise are of interest to the student. Faculty in the department publicize their research interest and grants on the SHU Chemistry website.

What co-curricular opportunities are available?

Chemistry majors and minors at Sacred Heart University have the opportunity to become a part of the Sacred Heart University Student Affiliate American Chemical Society (SHUSAACS) Club. The club’s mission is to promote chemistry to both the Sacred Heart and greater surrounding community. The mission is accomplished through the club’s hands-on science workshops at local elementary schools as well as at SHU. The club is also involved with middle and high school science fair competitions. SHU students become excited about science and learn how to communicate difficult concepts in clear and understandable terms. Many of our club members are also involved in their own independent research projects. For the last twenty years the American Chemical Society has nationally recognized SHUSAACS. Every spring about one dozen students attend the National ACS meeting and present a poster on the clubs efforts as well as present posters on their own independent research. This experience places our students in front of leading scientists that are able to view research posters and have intellectual scientific conversations with the students. Attending the national ACS meeting each spring allows our students to make contacts with leading academic and industrial scientists that have helped to shape student careers.
