Sacred Heart University’s Pioneers for Presents, a student-run organization, has launched its first-ever Little Red’s Toy Drive for this holiday season.

In partnership with the Office of Volunteer Programs & Service Learning, Pioneers for Presents wants to distribute toys to Campus Ministry’s adopted families, as well as other local children in need. It is asking the Sacred Heart community to drop off new, unwrapped toys in designated Little Red’s Toy Boxes around campus.

“Twenty-two percent of families in Bridgeport fall below the poverty line. That’s 8 percent higher than the national average of 14 percent,” said Neil Grasso, a junior communications major and member of Pioneers for Presents. “For many of these families, the holiday season can be one filled with struggle. With this toy drive, we are trying to ensure that these families will experience a holiday season filled with joy instead.”

Members of Pioneers for Presents hope the drive will bring in 500 toys by Tuesday.

“This is one of the newer initiatives here at Sacred Heart, but its impact can already be felt across campus,” said Jane Paley, communications professor. “We are always looking for ways to give back to our local communities, especially around the holiday season. Many families in our area facing hardship are given the difficult task of providing gifts for their children at this time of the year. If we can find a way to help, we will. Little Red’s Toy Drive is a perfect example of these kinds of efforts.”
