Sacred Heart University’s annual Discovery Gala once again broke its record for the amount of money raised, bringing in $893,000 for student scholarships.

More than 300 people attended the speakeasy-themed event at SHU’s West Campus (former GE corporate headquarters). Guests indulged in the illusion of traveling back in time to a party during the prohibition era, enjoying music, food and drinks that all played roles in bringing the theme to life. Sacred Heart’s newly acquired West Campus provided an excellent environment for the event and easily accommodated the considerable number of guests, as well as an incredible performance by former Yankee baseball star Bernie Williams and his All Star Band.

The success of this year’s gala was largely credited to the honorees, Board of Trustees Chairman Frank R. Martire ’69 and his wife, Marisa. They put forward a tremendous effort in raising money from their network of colleagues, friends and family, according to William Reidy, vice president for University Advancement. “Their efforts pushed the amount of money raised for student scholarships to a new high,” he said.  The record-breaking fundraising success was also realized because of continued and new support from our corporate, parent and alumni sponsors and many valued friends of the University.

Sacred Heart students also committed to making this year’s gala a huge success, said Reidy. “They worked really hard to welcome all our guests and ensure that everyone could see the incredible talents that fill our dorms, classrooms and campus” he said.

The SHUpermen, an all-men choral ensemble, was another high point of the evening, with a performance of “In My Room” that helped set the mood.
