Sacred Heart University has named Katie Burke, senior strategist and chief of staff at Edelman, a global communications marketing firm, to its board of trustees, the University’s top governing body.

Burke is one of the country’s leading political and corporate communications strategists, with nearly 20 years of experience at the highest levels of government and business. Before rejoining Edelman this year, she was CEO of Katie Burke Communications. She also served as executive vice president of marketing and communications at Nielsen, a global information, data and measurement company. In addition, she has been an executive-in-residence and professor of communications at SHU.

“It is an honor to deepen my relationship with Sacred Heart by joining the board of trustees,” Burke said. “Over the course of the last six years, I have had the privilege of seeing first-hand the University leadership’s commitment to providing an exceptional education, and I couldn’t be more pleased to join the team at such an exciting time for the school.”

In the political arena, Burke worked as communications director for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s victorious re-election bid in California. She also was director of television news in the Bush White House and senior spokeswoman and director of broadcast media for the Republican National Committee during the 2004 election cycle. Her career began in Connecticut as a staff member for former U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays.

“We are excited to have Katie join the board,” said John J. Petillo, president of Sacred Heart University. “She has an impressive background, and we are grateful to have this opportunity to learn from her. She will be a great addition.”
