Sacred Heart University will host its second annual RUNScience clinic for local running coaches and athletes Dec. 4, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Frank and Marisa Martire Business & Communications Center.
The evidence-based sports science clinic will include expert speakers in the fields of biomechanics, nutrition and physiology, as well as lectures from high school, collegiate and professional coaches.
“It’s a great resource and an incredible opportunity,” said Matthew F. Moran, associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Science and director of the exercise science undergraduate program. “The panel of speakers is top notch.”
One keynote speaker, Jimmy Radcliffe, is head strength and conditioning coach at the University of Oregon and has worked in his field for more than 30 years. Radcliffe is recognized as one of the field’s leaders in the development of resistance training programs for middle-distance and distance runners. “He’s widely recognized,” Moran said.
The other keynote speaker is Brian Fullem, author of The Runner’s Guide to Healthy Feet and Ankles, and a former competitive distance runner at Bucknell University.
Three clinical speakers and three running coaches also will present during the clinic.
Moran said the event is also a great networking opportunity, as people from New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut will gather to talk about running. Once the clinic is over, attendees and guests can continue conversations at Red’s Pub.
“It’s a great opportunity for runners and running coaches in the area,” Moran said. There is no coaching clinic like this one around, he added.
The Life & Sport Analysis Clinic at SHU also will provide certificates of completion for professional development credit for Connecticut high school coaches and teachers.
The day will include breakfast and lunch. Tickets for this limited-seating event are $65. For more information visit, http://www.sacredheart.edu/academics/collegeofhealthprofessions/academicprograms/exercisescience/lifeandsportanalysisclinic/runscience/.
