SHU to Introduce American History Minor

News Story: November 20, 2015

“American history is longer, larger, more various, more beautiful and more terrible than anything anyone has ever said about it,” wrote American author James Baldwin.

Sacred Heart University now offers a minor in American history, which complements its existing history major and minor.

According to Julie Mujic, assistant professor of history, the new minor serves to illuminate any major area of study—including, but not limited to, education, criminal justice, political science, economics, pre-law, communication & media arts, art & design and marketing.

As noted on the Department of History’s website, “Obtaining a more comprehensive understanding of American history will provide Sacred Heart University students in these areas and others with historical context for their future careers. When faced with decisions about strategy, planning or policy, for example, students who complete this minor will be able to develop positions based on a thorough grasp of similar circumstances in the American past.”

“We have noticed significant interest among our history majors—especially those who intend to go into the education program and become teachers. Students who plan to become social studies or history teachers see this minor as a way to boost their content knowledge in history,” Mujic says.

This minor also serves to enrich students on a personal level—offering contextual insight into the complexities of contemporary American life and providing a firm historical footing from which to make vital choices concerning relationships, work, and family.

The American History minor requires 18 credits: United States History to 1865, United States History and four electives from among the following:

  • History of Sports in America
  • Society in Colonial America
  • African-American History
  • The American Revolution
  • The Immigrant Experience
  • Westward Movement in 19th Century America
  • The Civil War
  • The Cold War and American Society
  • Reconstruction and Post-Civil War America
  • Gilded Age and Progressive Era
  • Catholicism in American Society
  • Women in American Society
  • American Environmental History
  • U.S. Foreign Policy
  • The Great Depression and New Deal

This minor is available now. Students can enroll with their advisers as they register for the spring 2016 semester.
