University College Partners with Local Businesses

News Story: March 26, 2015

Sacred Heart University’s University College is partnering with local businesses to help inform their employees about opportunities to further their education at SHU. The Education Partnership Program is spearheaded by Ellen Kovar, director of Corporate Recruitment for University College.

Kovar meets with human resource representatives from local businesses, municipalities and nonprofits and offers to partner with them to provide information and resources for their adult learners who want to advance their careers through continued education. “If the company has a tuition reimbursement program, all the better, but we want to let working adults know that there are many flexible options available to them here at Sacred Heart,” Kovar says.

Once a partnership has been established, a customized landing page is created on SHU’s website that is accessible from the partner’s intranet site. The landing page features access to much of what SHU has to offer, including a 10 percent tuition discount for the partners’ employees who enroll in part-time undergraduate studies. The first issue of a quarterly newsletter, UCAN, University College Academic Newsletter, will be distributed by the end of March.

Close to 10 partnerships have been signed so far and more are expected. Examples of participating partners are Bigelow Tea, Chartwells, United Illuminating and the Town of Fairfield.

Kovar says the partnerships are customized to the wants and needs of each partner, and she has many ideas for future expansion of the program. “I can see how this program could dovetail with the Problem-Based Learning Lab program in the Welch College of Business to open doors for both programs,” she says.
