Weekend a Success for Pioneer Athletic Teams

News Story: February 10, 2014

The past weekend was a successful one for Sacred Heart Athletic teams.  In a span of just over 24 hours, three Pioneer squads won conference titles and a fourth finished as runner-up.

On Saturday, the men’s and women’s fencing squads both captured NFC Championships, and on Sunday, the women’s indoor track and field team followed suit with a Northeast Conference crown. The men’s indoor track and field team finished as the NEC runner-up Sunday afternoon as well.

For men’s fencing, the crown marks the fifth consecutive NFC Championship for Sacred Heart. The Pioneers went 5-0 on the final day of league competition, posting convincing victories over Vassar, UMass, Boston College, Tufts and Dartmouth.

The women’s fencing team went 6-0 on the final day of league competition to capture its first-ever NFC Championship. The squad defeated Vassar, UMass, Boston College, Tufts, Dartmouth and Smith in convincing fashion to wrap up the title.

In addition to sharing the conference’s women’s championship with Brown, the Pioneers will also share the combined NFC Title since the Sacred Heart men also tied with Brown for the men’s conference crown.

It was the first women’s indoor track and field NEC Championship crown as well as the Pioneers cruised to the title with 136 points, 34 in front of runner-up LIU Brooklyn. Senior Brianna Castrogivanni earned MVP accolades for the Pioneers as she became the first woman in conference history to win individual titles in the mile, 3000m and 5000m at the same indoor championship.  The Sacred Heart men’s indoor track and field team finished in second place, thanks in part to three finishers in the top four places of Sunday’s shot put.
