A Sacred Heart University administrator is leaving to take on the role of university president for the second time in a year. Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., announced today that Seamus Carey, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at SHU, will assume the role of that college’s 26th president.

In its announcement, Transylvania quoted William T. Young, Jr., chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees: “Dr. Carey was chosen from a strong pool of candidates because of his dedication to the liberal arts and his academic and administrative experience, first as a philosophy professor and most recently as dean.”

David Coppola, former vice president for Strategic Planning and Administration at SHU, assumed the role of president at Keystone College in La Plume, Penn., on June 1, 2013. At that time, Thomas “Tim” Speicher, chair of Keystone’s Board of Trustees, described Coppola as someone with “a highly successful record as an educator and college administrator. In addition to his vast skills and experience, he has exhibited tremendous dedication and commitment to the field of education. He is extremely qualified to lead Keystone in the coming years.”

“As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary this year, we are also thrilled to celebrate these achievements by members of our administration. I think it says a lot about the breadth of experience and skills among our faculty and administrators that two of them have been selected in less than a year to lead their own universities,” said SHU President John J. Petillo. “Their departure presents a challenge for us, but it is one we will happily accept as we look forward to hearing of their future academic achievements.”
