SHU Hosts Homeland Security Executive Education Seminar

News Story: December 17, 2013

Sacred Heart University was the site for a Homeland Security Executive Education Seminar, conducted by the Center for Homeland Defense & Security (CHDS) on December 4. The meeting was attended by police, fire and EMS officials from area communities, such as Fairfield, Bridgeport, Trumbull and Norwalk; representatives from the Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Connecticut State Police, FBI, United States Coast Guard and more. Public safety officers from Sacred Heart and Fairfield University were also in attendance.

The meeting was organized through Bridgeport Emergency Management Director Scott Appleby and focused on assessing risk and managing catastrophic events. The agenda included discussion about the appropriate response to several emergency scenarios. “One scenario involved an explosion during a SHU/Fairfield University basketball game at Harbor Yard with injuries,” said Paul Healy, executive director of Public Safety.

Healy said that he was honored to host the seminar at Sacred Heart. “Not only was it a wonderful opportunity for the SHU Public Safety team to participate and gain knowledge, but it was also a great networking opportunity as emergency services partners from around the state and surrounding area were in attendance. It’s through collaboration and working together that we can be confident in our ability to respond to any emergency situation.”
