New Farrington College of Education Dean Announced
Message to the Community: New Farrington College of Education Dean
I am very pleased to announce that James C. Carl, Ph.D., will be the new dean of the Isabelle Farrington College of Education at Sacred Heart University. Dr. Carl is a respected scholar, author and academic leader with nearly 35 years of experience in education. Dr. Carl holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Union College; a teacher certification from Plymouth State University in New Hampshire; and a master’s in educational policy and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His dissertation was titled The Politics of Education in a New Key: The 1988 Chicago School Reform Act and the 1900 Milwaukee Parental Choice Program.
Dr. Carl comes to us from Cleveland State University where he has served as department chair of Curriculum and Foundations since July 2006. In that role, he was responsible for budgeting, scheduling, evaluating, grant writing and curriculum development, as well as resolving student and faculty concerns. He also coordinated relationships between the department and the wider university and metropolitan community and positioned the department to support future trends in K-12 education.
Dr. Carl is the author of Freedom of Choice: Vouchers in American Education, as well as numerous book chapters and refereed and editor reviewed journal articles.
Before joining Cleveland State University in 2002, Dr. Carl was an assistant professor in the Department of Education and Allied Studies at John Carroll University in Ohio. He also has experience teaching high school.
Dr. Carl was selected after a lengthy search that included consideration of a number of highly qualified candidates. It was not an easy task, and my grateful thanks go to Ann Clark, chair of the search committee, and the other members of her team. I also want to thank all of you who shared your thoughts and provided feedback to the committee during this process. Your input was an invaluable part of the process.
Dr. Carl will begin his new role effective August 1, and we are looking forward to having him on board. His input will be critical to the success of our strategic plan, our mission and our goals. I am confident that his passion for international education, along with his teaching and management experience, will lead him to great success here at SHU.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Carl to our community.
