Sacred Heart University Students, Faculty and Staff Provide a Merry Christmas for Local Families

News Story: September 13, 2012

Students, faculty and staff members at Sacred Heart University collected food, toys, clothes and other gifts to ensure a merry Christmas for 75 local families. The University worked with Golden Hill Methodist Church and St. Charles Parish to make the donations, said Maura Cook, assistant coordinator of Volunteer Programs at Sacred Heart.

She said the families were “adopted” by departments, sports teams, organizations and even individual students and faculty members. “The University really came through for those families,” she said, adding that along with the requested items, there were additional donations of cash and gift cards.

Staff and students also assisted with the distribution of the gifts. This involved delivering them to Golden Hill and helping families load them into their cars. “In some cases, our graduate students even delivered the gifts to the families’ homes,” Cook said.

Javier Vidal ‘13 also spearheaded a campus Toys for Tots collection that resulted in the donation of about five boxes of toys, Cook added.
