Message from SHU President Anthony J. Cernera on Haiti

News Story: January 1, 2010

The Sacred Heart University community is invited to come together this afternoon to pray with the people of Haiti as they continue the heartbreaking work of assessing the damage inflicted by the recent earthquake, and start to put their lives back together. The University has a proud tradition of supporting our neighbors in need, and I am sure there will be numerous opportunities to help in the near future and well beyond.

We will meet at 5 P.M. in the University’s Chapel of the Holy Spirit for a Prayer Vigil for Haiti. On the Chapel’s exterior walls are carved the Corporal Works of Mercy, inviting the faithful to feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty. To help fulfill that mandate, we are forming a University-wide task force to determine the best ways for our community to be of service. Further details will follow shortly.

Let us keep the people of Haiti in our prayers, especially those with direct connections to our University community. And let us take up this special cause in the new semester as a way to share our many blessings with those in desperate need.

Those who wish to make an immediate donation may want to contact the following agency, which has resources in Haiti already:
