Retired SHU Professor, Dr. Barry Herman, Receives Humanitarian Award

The Italian-American Historical Society of Connecticut presented Dr. Barry Herman a special Humanitarian Award at its annual dinner on Sunday, April 19, in New Haven. A professor of education at Sacred Heart University for the past 22 years, the Hamden resident was honored along with Brian Havens of North Haven, who received the Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Herman received several degrees, including his Ph.D., from the University of Connecticut. He retired from the New Haven Public School System, where he was a teacher, principal and administrator for 30 years. He was also an adjunct instructor at Southern Connecticut State University for 15 years.

President of the Ethnic Heritage Center, Dr. Herman is program chair of the Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven, and he hosts the “Jewish Forum” on North Haven’s public access television station. The author of eight books, he has been active in Hamden town government and is a member of the Democratic Town Committee, among numerous other commitments.
