SHU to Host Art & Design Expo

News Story: March 1, 2009

On Tuesday, April 7, Sacred Heart University’s Art & Design Department will host the 17th Art & Design Expo at the Gallery of Contemporary Art on campus in Fairfield, Conn. The Art & Design Expo includes an exhibit of SHU student works and will feature a guest lecture by Westport artist and designer Miggs Burroughs.

Class trips to the Expo have been organized by six area high schools. Nearly 200 students will be in attendance from Trumbull High School, Stratford’s Bunnell High School, Seymour High School, Derby High School, and Bridgeport’s Bassick and Harding High Schools. In addition, faculty and graphic design professionals are invited to attend this free event.

Miggs Burroughs is a prolific and well-known graphic artist, painter, postage stamp designer, inventor and television producer.  Past speakers have included such notable artists, designers, and illustrators as Murray Tinkelman, Jerry Pinkney, Chaz Maviyane-Davies, Wendell Minor, and Donato Giancola.

As part of the Expo, local high school students are invited to view the exhibit of student work that has been adjudicated by local practicing professional artists, designers and illustrators.  The exhibit includes the art work and digital and traditional design pieces of current SHU students.

The exhibit will contain 60 works that have all been selected as part of a vigorous juried process.  The final selection will be a well-rounded representation of the Department of Art and Design’s curriculum from the last year.  The jurors are David Cundy, clinical professor in the Mass Communication Department at Iona College; SHU alumnus Jason Roeder (’06), art director at Marketing Drive in Norwalk, Conn.; and Vladimir Shpitalnik, professor of illustration at Paier College of Art in Hamden, Conn.  Media will include digital works, drawings, oil and watercolor paintings, colored pencil works and collages, all ranging from basic drawings to computer generated magazine layouts and package design.

For additional information on the expo, contact Associate Professor of Art, Jack de Graffenried, at 203-371-7739.

The student art exhibit is on display at the Gallery of Contemporary Art on the campus of Sacred Heart University, 5151 Park Avenue, Fairfield, Conn., from March 22 through April 15, 2009.  The Gallery will be closed for Easter break from Wednesday, April 8 through Monday, April 13.
