SHU to Host Bill McGarvey Concert, Beautiful Mess

News Story: October 4, 2007

Sacred Heart University's department of Campus Ministry will sponsor a concert by singer/songwriter Bill McGarvey on Tuesday, October 30, at 7 p.m.

The concert, titled Beautiful Mess, is a biographical music and media presentation that incorporates songs from McGarvey's CD of the same title. Beautiful Mess details McGarvey's life growing up in a traditional Catholic family in Pennsylvania, his career in music, and how he found God in the American pop scene.

Bill found that his own spirituality was awakened through his involvement with popular culture, said Rev. Mark Villano, SHU's director of Campus Ministry. That's interesting and unique because a lot of people don't have very good things to say about popular culture and they want to leave it in order to find a deeper religious experience. But Bill went deeper into the popular culture and found a better appreciation for his faith and for his spiritual journey.

McGarvey was born and raised in Philadelphia and is now a resident of Hoboken, New Jersey. A graduate of Georgetown University, McGarvey is also a journalist. He is currently the editor-in-chief of

Beautiful Mess, released earlier this year, is his second CD. His first, Tell Your Mother, was released in 2003 and earned positive reviews from Time Out New York, Chicago Tribune, The Hartford Courant, Philadelphia Weekly and Performing Songwriter magazine.

Bill speaks to young adults from where they're at, not from where others think they should be, Rev. Villano said. We are also inviting campus ministries from other local colleges and universities. We think that this is an opportunity for us to reach out not just to our own students, but to other local students from Fairfield County.

The concert will be held in the University Commons and is open to the public. Admission is free.
