CHOOSING A MAJOR
A Few Key Points You Need to Understand

First: Your college major will place very few limitations on the job choices available to you after graduation. Liberal arts majors get hired to do just about every conceivable job in business, government and nonprofit organizations. Liberal arts majors may enjoy a distinct advantage at hiring time. Business leaders called the humanities essential to developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. And only 37% of CEO's said the purpose of a degree is to acquire work skills.

Second: You will excel in a major that you inherently enjoy. And when it comes time to choose a career or look for a job you are more likely to bring enthusiasm, good grades and a clearer sense of your own interests.

Three: Develop “transferable skills” through internships, volunteer service, and extra-curricular activities, as well as through the courses you take. Transferable skills are those that employers value, no matter the job or the career field.

Four: If there is a particular career you are hoping to prepare for, you may wish to take specific classes outside your major. To prepare for a specific career, some careers require a certain major, but in most cases the skills for particular career fields do not demand a particular academic major.
