| | | | SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY ALCOHOL POLICY Sacred Heart University accepts the fact that alcohol is part of society; therefore, we strive to educate students about alcohol effects and the prevention of alcohol abuse. SHU enforces Connecticut alcohol laws regarding legal age and open container. The following are definitions of some key terms as well as guidelines related to students and alcohol.
LEGAL AGE State law states that only individuals who are 21 years of age or older may purchase, possess, and consume alcohol.
UNDERAGE Individuals under 21 years of age may neither purchase, possess, nor consume alcohol.
INTOXICATION No student may be intoxicated while on campus or at University sponsored events.
SUPPLYING No one may purchase or otherwise provide alcohol to anyone underage.
OPEN CONTAINER Any alcoholic beverage out of the original container or having a broken seal is considered an open container, which may not be carried or consumed on SHU grounds (except in The Outpost).
KEGS AND BEER BALLS Kegs and beer balls are not permitted on campus (except the Outpost) without an approved alcohol registration form. Also, alcohol “punches” using wine or hard liquor are not permitted on campus.
SALE OF ALCOHOL Beer is sold only in The Outpost during designated hours. Any other sale of alcohol on campus must have approval through an alcohol registration form and State resources. Employees of The Outpost have the right and responsibility to deny the sale of beer to anyone under the age of 21, anyone carrying a false ID, and to anyone who appears to be intoxicated.
Students who wish to hold an event with alcoholic beverages must contact the Director of the Student Union for event guidelines and authorization forms. Any function which provides an alcoholic beverage must also provide non-alcoholic beverage alternatives in sufficient quantity and food must be available and featured prominently. Students should note that the use of alcohol is not an acceptable excuse for any inappropriate behavior exhibited by a student any time. For students with alcohol problems, the Counseling Center and Health Services Offices both serve as a resource to assist the students in receiving the appropriate assistance for recovery. | |
