LEADERSHIP WITHIN RESIDENTIAL LIFE
Student Leadership
Sacred Heart University provides leadership opportunities for those students living in the residence halls who have a desire to make the most of their residential living experience. These opportunities are specifically geared toward enhancing life in the residence halls and are only available for residential students.
  • Hall Council: Each residence hall has its own Hall Council, which is a student run organization responsible for creating and implementing events and activities within the residence halls to promote community and a positive living environment. Fund-raiser's and working to address resident concerns are also part of the Hall Council Experience.  This is an outstanding opportunity for students to create their own experience in the halls for themselves and their peers!
  • Inter Resident Council (IRC): IRC is the governing body for the Hall Councils and focuses on planning activities between the residence halls and on a campus-wide level.  Students may also use this forum to voice their opinions and address campus wide issues.
  • National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH): Comprised of the top 1% of student leaders on campus, members of the National Residence Hall Honorary are recognized for their positive impact on the campus community.  Recognizing other leaders on campus, NRHH membership must be attained through application and demonstration of positive activities on campus.

Staff Leadership

  • Residence Hall Directors (RHDs): Graduate Assistants who live in the halls and supervise the Resident Assistant staff, facilitate the Hall Councils, and strive to provide students with a living and learning environment.  RHDs oversee general operations of their assigned residential facility and serve as a liaison between the residents and other campus departments to address needs within the buildings.  RHDs uphold the residence hall policies, and are available to advise and refer residents to various campus resources as needed.  RHDs serve as on-call staff to respond to urgent matters 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  These staff members are available to assist with any needs a resident may have while living on campus.
  • Professional Leadership: The department is headed by a Director and Assistant Director of Residential Life and Housing Services who work closely with the Resident Hall Directors in every aspect of residential life.  The Director and Assistant Director of Residential Life and Housing Services supervise the RHD staff as well as the RA staff of the department.  Working in tandem, the Director and Assistant Director oversee all matters within the residential facilities operated by Sacred Heart University.
