Making a contribution often means taking a leadership role, whether it's in tutoring a single child or running for an office on your local school board, whether it's planning your family's vacation or organizing the food bank at a crisis shelter. A key element of the University's mission is to prepare you to be a leader in service to others.
Leadership is a skill that requires training, and you can receive that training through two very special classes taught by the Student Life department at Sacred Heart University. Referred to as STAR (Students Taking Active Roles) and LEAP (Lead Evaluate Apply Prepare), these eight-week courses bring students into contact with successful leaders from the Sacred Heart University community and offer opportunities to put what has been learned into practice in “real world” situations.
STAR (STAR an acronym for Students Taking Active Roles) begins the process with guest instructors who address topics such as communication, group dynamics, time and stress management, and leadership styles. LEAP (LEAP is an acronym for Lead Evaluate Apply Prepare) was created for developing leaders who want to create an action plan for th their life. This course allows student leaders to learn how to apply their leadership experiences into their personal and professional lives.
Each year Sacred Heart University hosts an awards ceremony to recognize members of the Sacred Heart University community who have proven themselves to be exceptional leaders. The most prestigious Campus Life Leadership Awards: one for Outstanding Involvement by First-Year, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Students, the Doug Bohn Unsung Hero Award which seeks to commend a person whose work has otherwise not attracted widespread notice, and the John Croffy Outstanding Leader Award, which commemorates exemplary leadership and service by an SHU junior or senior are presented annually.
