What Does Residential Life Have To Offer?
Residential Life offers you more than just a place where you study and sleep. Your Residence Hall is a living and learning community designed to help you grow in all aspects of your life.   Our goal is to be an extension of the Sacred Heart University classrooms by being the place where you continue conversations from class, work on group projects, or spend time studying by yourself.

Beyond being an extension of the classroom, here you will find a place to meet interesting people from interesting places in a place that will be your home away from home.  By living in close proximity to your classmates and peers, you are bound to develop friendships to last a lifetime as you listen to music, read books, write papers, and discuss assignments with each other.  Here, you will share a hallway, a bathroom, and your bedroom; but more importantly you will share stories, laughter, and experiences that will make your college experience uniquely yours!

Life in the Halls
Residence Hall access is programmed through your SHUcard.  Your ID gets you into the exterior of your hall, and also serves as your room key.  In addition, by showing your ID to security personnel in each building, you'll be able to visit your friends in other residence halls on campus.

As you make your way through the buildings, you are bound to hear music playing, smell microwaved popcorn, and see different ways students have set up their rooms and decorated their doors.  As long as it feels like home, that's what really matters!

Apart from roommates and neighbors, some of the first people you will meet will be the hall staff.  Each Residence Hall has a Residence Hall Director and a staff of undergraduate Resident Assistants. These people are selected from a group of highly-motivated individuals based upon their leadership abilities. There is a Resident Assistant on duty in the hall office every Sunday through Wednesday from 8:00PM until 1:00 AM, Thursday through Saturday from 8:00 PM until 2:00 AM, and remains on call until 8:00AM the next morning.  The Residence Hall Director (RHD) is available during posted office hours and to respond to emergencies at any time.  While on duty, the RAs make sure that the halls remain conducive to sleep and study by reporting maintenance needs, talking with residents, and enforcing University policies if it becomes necessary.

The Residence Life Staff also provides programming throughout the different living areas. The Resident Assistants create and implement programs based on a model that reflects the Sacred Heart University Mission Statement and is intended to guide residential students as they become:

  • "educated in mind"
  • "knowlegeable of self"
  • "compassionate in heart"
  • "rooted in faith"
  • "responsive to social and civic obligations"
  • "able to respond to an ever-changing world".

At Sacred Heart University, we take a holistic approach toward educating the students in our residential facilities by targeting these six characteristics that Sacred Heart University has identified as traits to which each of our community members should aspire. The Resident Assistants provide various programs on a regular basis and strive to program around their residents' interests. There is ongoing leadership training provided for all residents and Resident Assistants through Leadership Institutes, In-services, Campus Wide programming, and community service activities promoted by the Office of Residential Life and Housing Services.  Opportunities for involvement and leadership abound at Sacred Heart University!
