About the Jandrisevits Learning Center
The Jandrisevits Learning Center (JLC), located on the lower level of the Ryan-Matura Library, offers students from every academic level an opportunity to improve their knowledge in all content areas and to develop specific language and computer skills needed to succeed in courses. Staffed by highly experienced faculty, graduate and peer tutors in disciplines across the curriculum, the JLC provides a friendly learning environment where the individual needs of students are our primary concern.
The JLC offers the following support services free of charge to all SHU students:
- Individualized Tutoring by appointment in all disciplines provided by staff or faculty, graduate and peer tutors.
- Classroom Learning Assistants (CLAs) are peer tutors nominated by faculty and trained in the Socratic method of tutoring who can provide academic support in disciplines across-the-curriculum.
- Monthly Workshops on college-level learning skills include such topics as note taking, time management, test taking, grammar, punctuation, math concepts and problem-solving, speech writing & delivery, science report writing and essay writing .
- Disability Services in compliance with S504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act provide an array of mandated services, including disclosure letters, extended time and separate environment testing, in-class note takers, interpreters or technical services for the hard of hearing, alternative forms of testing, books on tape, and course substitutions when appropriate. (Additional billable services for non-mandated accommodations are also available) .
- Computer Lab for all SHU Students.
- Adaptive Technology Lab for learning and physically challenged Students
- Online Writing Lab (OWL) for electronic assistance in writing
- Online Math Service for assistance in computation and problem solving
- Drop-in Tutoring for selected courses and referrals for individualized tutoring
- Student Study Lounge and helpful connections to other campus resources.
