| | | | SOCIOLOGY Welcome to the Sacred Heart University Sociology Program! From its earliest traditions, the field of Sociology has been committed to the principle that the ability to apply scientific methods and sound theory to the study of social phenomena is critically necessary, not only for an adequate understanding of the world, but also for conscious efforts to make the world more humane. Therefore, the purpose of the field is to train people to enter into a mode of inquiry, a means of intellectual development, and a continuous effort to understand, explain, criticize, and improve the human condition.
As opposed to many institutions of higher learning that describe their Sociology programs in generalist terms or highlight the specialized degrees/certificates offered, we have a single dedication to the bachelor's degree in sociology. This allows for a more coherent and focused course of study. For instance, our course of study is designed around the theme of social change and we have begun a systematic effort to incorporate an ethical analysis component into it. During their senior year, students work closely with a faculty member as they prepare their senior thesis.
