SHU HOSTS OPEN HOUSE FOR CT HURRICANES DRUM & BUGLE CORPS

SHU hosted the first open house for the CT Hurricanes Drum & Bugle Corps for their 2012 season on Nov. 27th, 2011.  The corps had well over 100 people in attendance as they bagan preparations for their show entitled, "Blokes & Birds."  The staff held rehearsals for brass, percussion, and guard throughout the day and the day ended with performances from all three sections.  Please visit http://www.cthurricanes.org/ for more information.

__________

The Connecticut Hurricanes All-Age Drum & Bugle Corps was first organized in 1932 in Derby Conn. as the John H. Collins Fife, Drum & Bugle Corps. They performed regionally as a parade unit for twenty three years prior to transforming their focus to field competition in 1955. Coincidently, the Hurricanes name and identity were adopted that same year in the wake of two devastating Hurricanes, Diane and Connie, that ravaged southern New England in August of 55'.

The Hurricanes matured quickly in the competitive arena, and since 1962 when they won their first major title, the Northeastern Circuit Championship, they have garnered every major title in the senior/all-age realm. Consistency, professional excellence and genuine audience appeal have become tenants of the Hurricane tradition, ideals they have held throughout their career. It is these championship traditions that inspire the Hurricanes through each season as they continually strive for perfection. Such dedication to the Hurricanes way has, through the decades, earned them recognition as one of the elites in the marching arts activity.

It is the mission of the Hurricanes to provide a competitive platform on which youth can build successful, healthy lifestyles through music and performance, and to promote artistic excellence. Emphasis is placed on development of self-esteem, self-motivation and self-reliance. It encourages sportsmanship, teamwork, civic pride and contribution of one's personnel best to a group effort, geared towards achievement of common goals. It's an education designed to help members become the best they can be. It can be the education of a lifetime!

Now hailing from Seymour, Connecticut, the Corps celebrated it's 80th year of continuous operation in 2011 as well as their 57th year of field competition. Hundreds of people have passed through the ranks over the span of eight decades and it's fair to estimate that in hindsight, one and all would agree that the Hurricane experience was one of the most exhilarating and rewarding of their life!
