ABOUT US

Peer EducatorsThe Student Wellness Education and Empowerment Team (s.w.e.e.t.) is a fun and positive group that promotes wellness on campus; we believe that “a healthy life is a s.w.e.e.t. life.” We are students helping students!

S.w.e.e.t. Peer Educators have a special interest in encouraging responsible choices and attitudes about alcohol. We provide information on important issues college students care about (alcohol and other drugs, mental health, sexual health, tobacco) and connect students with helpful resources. We also challenge negative perceptions and validate positive social norms regarding drinking behavior at SHU and are actively involved with the SHUSAID marketing campaign. We represent the majority of SHU students who make healthy choices and look out for their friends. Finally, we promote a fun, healthy and safe campus environment and college lifestyle for everyone here at SHU.

s.w.e.e.t. Peer Educators are selected through an application and interview process during the spring semester. Members of s.w.e.e.t. complete a Certified Peer Education training program in August that includes listening and referral skills, dispute intervention, problem solving, caring within limits, ethics and role modeling, marketing, presentation and programming skills. Members continue to be trained by the Wellness Center staff and outside experts on topics such as alcohol and other drugs, mental health and stress, healthy relationships, tobacco use, sexual health and STD/STI prevention. They meet weekly to plan programs and target high risk times of the academic year. S.w.e.e.t. is an affiliate of the Bacchus Network, which is the parent organization of over 1,000 peer education groups at colleges and universities around the world.
