About the Department
The Department of Media Studies and Digital Culture combines social and cultural analysis of the media and communication technologies with media production including digital video, broadcast and print journalism, television, radio, photography, and digital multimedia.
The curriculum is interdisciplinary by nature and international in scope, blending theory and practice, the historical and the contemporary, and the mainstream with the alternative.
The department is broken into two major disciplines, Media Studies and Communication and Technology Studies. Those majoring in Media Studies explore everything from broadcasting and filmmaking to journalism. While Communication Technology Studies majors take courses that range from web design and motion graphics to technical writing and computer ethics. The department gives all of its students access to cutting-edge technology in order to adequately prepare them for whatever career choice they choose to pursue within the media or in another field of their choice. Students in the Department of Media Studies and Digital Culture become effective communicators through, words, images and sounds.
Our goal is to produce responsible media scholars, consumers, and communication professionals who are able to: 1) analyze the social effect, moral substance, and aesthetic value of the media and communication technologies, and 2) acquire the social and artistic skills involved in the conception, shaping, and execution of their own media/communication projects and career paths.
By facilitating critical and creative thinking, our goal is to graduate a student who understands the ethical implications of producing mass-mediated messages, and appreciates the profound social responsibility she or he has as communication professionals, while also gaining the necessary skills to put their ideas and ideals into action.
