4-YEAR CAREER ACTION PLAN
FRESHMAN YEAR
- Be sure to speak with SHU faculty, advisor's, career counselors about career options in your major
- Visit the Career Development and Placement Center and develop a resume and explore career options
- Check out your account on PioneerLink (Internship/Job Posting System)
- Identify and confirm your values, interests, personality and skills. The Career Development Center offers a program called Major in Success to help you decide on a major and explore options.
- Consider participating in one extracurricular activity
- write for the Spectrum
- join a club
- intramurals
- varsity sports
- and/or community service
- Get to know at least one faculty or staff member this year
- Take every opportunity to develop your computer and writing skills
- Check out Career Developments’ Major and Career Research sites
- Talk to people about what they do for a living
- Do your best to get good grades
SOPHOMORE YEAR
- If you have not already done so, register with PioneerLink, the SHU online Internship/Job Posting System
- Declaring your major or considering a change? Contact the Career Development and Placement Center and ask about the Major in Success program
- Talk with professors and career counselors about occupations related to your interests/major
- Continue to gain experience through:
- internships
- job shadows
- volunteer experience
- community service
- study abroad
- summer job related to your interests
- continue involvement in University activities
- Participate in resume and interviewing workshops
- Update your resume and have a Career Counselor review it
- Look for career panels and employer information sessions sponsored by Academic Departments, Athletics, and Career Development
- Attend University Internship/Job Fairs to plan for next year find out what’s out there!
JUNIOR YEAR
- Post your current, approved resume/cover letter onto PioneerLink
- Pursue internship opportunities
- Continue networking with individuals in the field you have chosen a career
- Job shadow or conduct informational interviews
- Update your resume and get it approved through the Career Development office
- Attend a University Internship/Career Fair
- Review alternate career plans – explore graduate programs; admission requirements
- Take a practice graduate school admission test...GRE, LSAT, GMAT, MCAT
- Meet with your career advisor to plan your job search campaign
SENIOR YEAR
- Start your job search during your fall semester
- Post your current, approved resume/cover letter onto PioneerLink
- Check out job opportunities and research companies you are interested in
- Watch for SHU Career Development and alumni events that give you the opportunity to network with employers and alumni
- On-Campus Interviews
- Career Fairs
- Education Fairs
- Guest Speakers
- Apply for jobs and participate in as many interviews as possible
- Participate in Career Development’s On-Campus Interviewing Program
- Take necessary exams apply to graduate programs that fit your needs
