THE CENTER FOR CATHOLIC THOUGHT, ETHICS AND CULTURE
WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to CCTEC, the Center for Catholic Thought, Ethics, and Culture. CCTEC offers a rich array of educational opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and the local community. On this website, students can find out about our certificate programs in Catholic Studies and in Catholic Social Thought. Faculty can find out about opportunities to teach in these programs. Anyone can see what engaging lecture is next scheduled, or follow our suggested links to some of the best Catholic resources on the web.

CCTEC's programs and lectures have a Catholic focus, obviously, but we believe that people from any other religious background—even of no religious background—will find much of interest here. One cannot understand culture and politics, whether American or international, without understanding the world's largest religious communion, Roman Catholicism.

As its mission statement reflects, CCTEC honors the call of Pope John Paul II in From the Heart of the Church for Catholic universities to promote interdisciplinary studies, which, “assisted by a careful and thorough study of philosophy and theology, enable students to acquire an organic vision of reality and to develop a continuing desire for intellectual progress.” It also honors this challenge of the American Bishops: “The values of the Church's social teaching must not be treated as tangential or optional. They must be a core part of teaching and formation.”

There is no more exciting place to meet these challenges for the 21st century than in a lay-run, forward-looking, mission-focused, and socially responsive university such as Sacred Heart. The former president of Notre Dame, Fr. Theodore Hesberg, often said that a Catholic university should be a place where the Church does its thinking. That is our vision for CCTEC, with the aim that Sacred Heart University effectively trains the next generation of Catholic laypeople to lead and to serve.
