SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY RANKS 11TH IN THE NATION ON INTEL’S 2005 "MOST UNWIRED COLLEGE CAMPUSES"
FAIRFIELD, Conn.—Sacred Heart University has made the grade on Intel's 2005 list of the
“Most Unwired College Campuses.” The ranking is the result of a survey that identified the top college and university campuses in the U.S. for wireless Internet accessibility.
SHU ranked 11th on the list, in the company of Dartmouth, Carnegie Mellon University, United States Military Academy at West Point, and the College of William & Mary, to name a few.
The survey, sponsored by Intel Corporation, examined schools with more than 1,000 students. Data was gathered from university interviews, public documents and industry resources, the Princeton Review's list of “America's Most Connected Campuses” and an online survey executed in partnership with the Center for Digital Education.
SHU is one of the first colleges in the U.S. to offer all students a laptop computer. The Mobile Computing Program provides a new laptop computer to every full-time undergraduate student. Students get refreshed with a new laptop every two years, and keep a two year old laptop after four years, or when they graduate.
The University's entire campus is "wired" to support anytime, anywhere learning with wireless network access throughout campus as well as network jacks in most on-campus dorms. Students also get free laptop battery replacement as often as needed, and unlimited free printing at various locations on campus.
According to Michael Trimble, assistant vice president for technology, "SHU has made a substantial and long term commitment to technology—especially those things that support technologically-enabled improvements in teaching and learning. As a result, we are graduating students who are both well educated and completely comfortable using the latest technologies."
