INTERNSHIPS & EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Internships
Every student majoring in business administration has the opportunity to work in a business or management internship to learn the rigors of the business environment and prepare for a successful professional career. Interested students work with a faculty coordinator of internships and the Career Development Office to obtain a desired position. A typical internship requires between 10 and 20 hours of work experience per week over a semester. Some internships are paying, while others are non-paying. The internship experience is recorded and assessed in a portfolio. At the conclusion of the internship, students re-evaluate skills, career goals and career development needs in light of the experience. You must complete all sections of the portfolio and submit it to your faculty advisor in order to receive credit.

Capstone Business Simulation
All business students, regardless of their majors, get to participate in this senior capstone project where they practice applying their strategic management and functional skills to the management of a company in a close to real-life setting. When taking BU301 (Business Policy), students are divided into teams that work together in making marketing, research & development, production and finance decisions in an integrated manner to implement their competitive strategies and build their businesses. At the end of the project, each student team can compare its company’s performance with those achieved by over 2000 other student teams from other universities around the world.

Business Ethics Competition
Each semester BU 257 Business Ethics students compete in an analysis of a current ethical topic. In the past topics have included the subprime mortgage crisis, the Wall Street meltdown, executive compensation, and this year the BP Oil Crisis is the topic. Each class competes in teams of 3 students to produce a class winner. The winning teams from each class then compete for a final winner which is judged by the WCOB faculty. The Fall semester winners compete against the Spring semester winner to be the winner for the academic year. Students do independent research on the topic and educate each other on these timely and important ethical issues.

Frontline Supervisory Skills
This course is designed as a laboratory where experiential learning is the teaching approach used to teach the course. Students practice role plays and are videotaped in management role plays each week practicing a different skill. Topics covered range from interviewing, delegating, handling conflict, giving a performance appraisal, framing an idea, dealing with emotions at work and finally terminating employees. Real time feedback is given to students on how well they execute the skill. Students write their own role plays and practice being in a managerial role. This senior level course is designed to prepare students to become entry level managers.
